The Space to Bloom at The.BlkRoom

The Bloom Residency

The Bloom Residency for Black Women is a transformative program facilitated by The.BlkRoom and generously sponsored by Angel Bat Dawid. This initiative is dedicated to empowering Black women artists by providing them with access to TBR's creative space, vibrant community, valuable resources, and an extensive network of mentorship opportunities. The residency invites artists to delve into their work through the unique lens of their experiences with Black womanhood, fostering a deep exploration of identity, creativity, and expression.

The goal of this residency is not project completion or output but cultivating the quality environment needed for Black female artists to Thrive!

“We need to figure out what we need to be SUPPORTED first as Artists! We need to get ourselves together and figure out what we need

- Angel Bat Dawid

Spanning one year, the residency emphasizes collaboration between the resident artist and a selected women's social service organization, promoting a holistic approach to art-making that intertwines creativity with social impact. Participants will have the opportunity to engage and facilitate a variety of initiatives, including workshops, showcases, project development, community engagement, and active involvement in social service efforts, creating a dynamic platform for artistic expression and community advocacy.

The Bloom Residency aims to create a nurturing environment where Black women artists can thrive both personally and artistically. By empowering participants to explore their creative visions while advocating for social justice and community empowerment, the residency ultimately seeks to impact both the artists and the communities they engage with. Through this program, The.BlkRoom and Angel Bat Dawid aspire to cultivate a legacy of artistic excellence and social responsibility among Black women creators. Eva Supreme's inclusion as the first resident artist sets a powerful tone for the transformative journey ahead.

Stages of the Residency

The Bloom Residency is structured into seven thoughtfully designed stages, each instrumental in nurturing the artist’s journey:

1. Stillness: Artists begin their residency by settling into the space, taking time to observe and absorb their environment, and laying the groundwork for inspiration.

2. Pruning: Through introspection, artists will identify and remove obstacles that hinder their creative process, creating clarity for their artistic vision.

3. Nurturing: This stage emphasizes self-care and mentorship, allowing artists to replenish their spirits and foster connections that uplift and inspire.

4. Waiting:
Artists will cultivate patience and trust in their creative processes, embracing the natural ebb and flow of artistic growth.

5. Consistency: Participants will commit to their practice, building discipline and dedication in their art-making journey.

6. Blooming: Artists will begin to fully express their unique creative voices, celebrating their growth and the richness of their perspectives.

7. Giving Back: The final stage encourages artists to engage with social service and social justice organizations, using their artistry to contribute meaningfully to the community and advocate for social change.
